Microbes simply eat-grow-divide. The rate of cell
division and growth varies among small organisms. Examples include
Salmonella and Staphylococcus which double in 20-30
minutes so 10 initial cells in an egg-salad sandwich become 40,960
cells in 4 hours. Other organisms like Mycobacterium leprae
which causes leprosy may take 10-30 days to double.
