Notes:

The growth and other activities are greatly influenced by the environment. Not all microbes respond the same to each environmental factor, so microbes are distributed throughout all natural habitats. Some microbes survive but do not grow well in certain environments; and these organisms are "duric." For example some microbes survive boiling water but do not grow well in those extremely high water temperatures. Other microbes grow well (philic) under certain conditions; and some microbes do not grow well (phobic) under certain conditions in the environment. We will discuss examples later. Microbes with very specific (narrow range) of environmental conditions where growth occurs are called fastidious; and microbes that "can adapt to" and grow well in a wider range of temperatures, pH, and oxygen concentrations are called facultative. E.coli is facultative and Haemophilus is fastidious.
