Learner Outcomes

The foundations of undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, focus on components involving active learning, technology, communications, decision making, ethics, human relations/diversity, global perspectives, environmental perspectives, and career-life adaptability.  To facilitate meaningful treatment of the components by faculty in their courses, each faculty member will incorporate components that are most appropriate and relevant to each of their courses.

The desired learner outcomes after completion of this course include the following:

1.   Communicate basic microbiological terminology.

2.   Summarize current microbiology articles and write a response, describe colony and microscopic

characteristics of selected microbes, and identify unknown microbes by following flow diagrams, scientific

       method, and library research.

3.    Perform basic microbiological techniques such as using microscopes, inoculation, measuring microbes,

dilution, pour plating, pipeting, staining, streaking, and smearing.

4.    Discuss the transmission, growth, and control of microbes; understand the importance and significance of

microbiology, and apply the information to agriculture, food science, and health science.

5.    Recognize organism response to presence of microbes, symptoms and signs of disease, presence of

indicator species in food and water, and outline a procedure for evaluation of host/food/water.
